In the Cleft: Joy Comes in the Mourning: A Story of Hope After Tragedy by Dana Goodman is a heart-breaking account of her journey through the dark night of the soul as she endures the ravages of cancer that took her first husband, her young son and her beloved mother-in-law in a short period of time. In her despair, cancer again knocked at her door - her second husband both diagnosed with cancer, at the same time her son received a diagnosis of a deadly brain tumor. Emerging from this horrific tragedy, she tells a story of hope as she stepped from darkness into light, being kept safe by God’s ever-so-close presence. Her story is one of hope beyond grief as she displays the goodness and sweetness of the Lord through the times in the deepest and darkest valleys, being kept safe in the cleft of the Rock (the Lord). Devastating and destructive as her journey was and one that most could not imagine, Dana chooses “hope” and helps others emerge from their darkness, whatever that may be, so that they too might find light in this poignant read.
The glimpses of life and the encounters in the throne room of God are shared as a blessing to all as they endure their “Dark Night” relating that one can still have hope and faith in God. Her purpose in this reflection is to give others who have been broken and devastated by loss a way to grieve and heal, to know they are not alone, and to help others to know that, “Joy Comes in the Mourning.”
Dana’s book is deep, reflective and written from one who loves God. Her tender sentiments, thoughts and experiences are shared, weaving a deeper story of love – God’s love throughout the most difficult of times. Intertwined with Scripture and beautiful quotes, this book illuminates Dana’s faith in God and also will encourage others to not let go and to not give up. Only God alone can heal your pain, but as Dana exhibits through her book - His presence can carry you through the deepest valleys. A highly recommended read for those that have experiences any kind of deep loss. (Disclaimer: Keep Kleenexes nearby and your soul will not remain untouched.)
